We describe a partial analog of the notion of a group extension in the context of p-local finite groups. We give a complete classification of extensions of a p-local finite group by a finite  p-group or a group of order prime to p. We also classify certain subsystems of a  given p-fusion system, where the notion of an index is well defined, and is either a power of p or an integer relatively prime to p.
