Introduction:

On the occasion of the XIV Encuentro de Topología (XIV Spanish Topology Meeting) to be held in Granada (Spain) in November 1-3,  and closely coordinaated with that event, the Department of Algebra, Geometry and Topology of the University of Málaga is pleased to host the CATA 07 (Advanced Courses on Topology and Applications).

We have scheduled two minicourses, Topology and Robotics (Michael Farber, University of Durham) and Competing Species and Homeomorphisms of the Disc (Rafael Ortega, Universidad de Granada) whose purpose is to highlight the new interactions of  topology with areas in which topological methods have been recently and successfully applied. For that reason, and as part of the subjects to be treated may not be very close to  what a topologist is used to, these courses are directed to a broad audience: From the young doctor or graduate student with some knowledge of topology to the well established topologist interested in the application of topological tools to new and unexpected areas.

The course Topology and Robotics will be given by Prof. Michael Farber from University of Durham. Prof. Farber's main research area is precisely the applications of topology. Among these, he has successfully used and developed specifics topological tools in robotics. For instance, he introduced the concept of Topological complexity of a given motion planning algorithm. Also, he has organized two conferences  Topology and Robotics 2003 and Topology and Robotics 2006, supported and hosted by the ETH of Zurich, closely related with the subject of the course.

On the other hand, the course Competing Species and Homeomorphisms of the Disc will be imparted by Prof. Rafael Ortega from Universidad de Granada, whose main research interest is non linear analysis in which he is a recognized specialist. He has made relevant contributions to the fields of differential equations and dynamical systems by applying topological methods, some of which will be explained along the course.

CATA07 bill be held at the Facultad de Ciencias of Universidad de Málaga, located in the main campus of the university. Please find here the exact location and its facilities, as well as useful advise about directions.

As indicated above these courses are organized in coordination with the XIV Encuentro de Topología to be held in Granada (located 120 km. from Málaga) in November 2-4. For those attending that event, the organization will provide a free bus ride to Granada in November 1st.

Finally, here is a list of the members of the organizing committee. You may contact any of them for further assistance.
